MISCELLANEOUS:

  • Hops was considered a relaxing herb during the middle ages, long before it was added as an ingredient in beer. Brewers found that adding hops provided a unique bitter flavour which significantly increased the shelf life – essential for long journeys and for exportation
  • Humulus has been used to aromatize liquors used as aperitifs and digestifs – appropriate considering humulus is a bitter and digestive aid!
  • The species name, lupulus, is derived from lupus, the Latin word for wolf – based on the plant’s habit of climbing on other plants as a wolf does a sheep. Its common name, hops, is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word hoppan, meaning to climb
  • King George III of the United Kingdom was reported to bed down on pillows filled with hops to help calm him
